Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
The treatment is delivered via electrohydraulic technology, the gold standard of shockwave therapy. The shockwave enters the body as soundwaves that affect all tissue the applicator is directed at. The soundwaves can reach as deep as 12 cm (the height of a standard can), and it results in increased blood flow and decreased inflammation.
What does it feel like?
Over an area without inflammation, it feels like a rubber band snapping on your skin. Over a āhot spotā, patients report a deeper discomfort, often the same discomfort they are being treated for.Ā As the treatment progresses, those āhot spotsā tend to resolve, giving good relief from pain in the course of one session.
How long does it take? How many sessions will I need?
A treatment lasts about 15 minutes depending on the number of shocks. Some patients notice a dramatic improvement with just 3 sessions, while more chronic issues may require 6 or more sessions to feel significant improvement of symptoms.
How much does it cost?
1000-1500 shocks cost $150, each additional 500 shocks are $50. Optimal healing occurs when shockwave therapy is combined with physical therapy. Depending on how long the session is will determine the total cost. Please speak with your physical therapist about cost of combined PT and shockwave sessions.
Is it covered by insurance?
Shockwave is currently not covered under most insurance plans; we can provide a superbill for you to submit if requested.
Insurance
Holistic PT is a fee-for-service practice. We do not accept or bill insurance. You will be provided with a detailed receipt (often called a superbill) that you can submit to your insurance for any available out-of-network benefits. You are welcome to make payment with an HSA card.
